Quotes From St. Francis

“Preach the Gospel at all times and when necessary use words.”

“Start by doing what's necessary; then do what's possible; and suddenly you are doing the impossible.”

“Lord, make me an instrument of your peace; where there is hatred, let me sow love; where there is injury, pardon; where there is doubt, faith; where there is despair, hope; where there is darkness, light; and where there is sadness, joy.”

“For it is in giving that we receive.”

“If you have men who will exclude any of God's creatures from the shelter of compassion and pity, you will have men who will deal likewise with their fellow men.”

“While you are proclaiming peace with your lips, be careful to have it even more fully in your heart.”

“What we are looking for is what is looking.”

“If God can work through me, he can work through anyone.”

“It is no use walking anywhere to preach unless our walking is our preaching.”

“Above all the grace and the gifts that Christ gives to his beloved is that of overcoming self.”

“Blessed is the servant who loves his brother as much when he is sick and useless as when he is well and an be of service to him. And blessed is he who loves his brother as well when he is afar off as when he is by his side, and who would say nothing behind his back he might not, in love, say before his face.”

Reflection

The knowledge I have gained from the research on my person of virtue is that St. Francis lived his life in poverty even though he had everything.  At first Francis was living a very wealthy lifestyle because his dad was a very rich cloth merchant.  But one day when Francis was praying, Christ was talking to him and told him to repair his church.  So Francis took cloth from his dad’s shop and sold them to gain the money to repair the church.  But when Francis’ dad found out about this, he made Francis return all his money.  He also gave his dad all the clothes his dad gave him and soon he was left with nothing.  He told his dad that he is no longer his father but now God is his father in Heaven.  Francis did something he knew he shouldn’t have done but he did it for a good cause.  St. Francis’ life decisions have inspired me to live these beatitudes in my own life because St. Francis lived these beatitudes throughout his entire life and in return he was taken to heaven when he died.  It inspires me because I know that if I want to go to heaven then I must live these beatitudes that St. Francis lived.  Some challenges or difficulties that I might have living out these beatitudes is that I might not be able to give everything that I have to the needy but I can give things that I don’t need and that they need to them.  Some things that St. Francis did, I might not be able to do, but I can do small things similar to what he does.

Living the Beatitudes

St. Francis lived the sixth beatitude which is "Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God."  St. Francis was caring to animals and he was caring to leapers.  Also he cared for and did what he could for the poor.  St. Francis lived the fifth beatitude which was "Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy."  Francis was merciful to the poor, especially the leapers.  One day, Francis saw a leaper and gave the leaper all his possessions right on the spot. Also, when Francis went to a pilgrimage at Rome he saw how little people were donating to the tomb of St. Peter, he donated all his money to it.

A Model Life

When Francis was praying at the old San Damiano church, he heard Jesus on the cross talking to him saying, "Francis, repair my church."  Francis thought Jesus meant church with a lowercase "c" and by the church he was in.  But what Jesus meant was the capital "C" church.  So Francis took cloth from his father's shop and sold it to make money to repair the old church.  When his father found out about what he had been doing, his father dragged Francis in front of the whole town and the Bishop and demanded that Francis return back the money to his father.  The Bishop told Francis to give back the money and God will provide.  So Francis gave his father all the money and and took off all the clothes that his father gave him.  In front of the town Francis said,"Pietro Bernardone is no longer my father.  From now on I can say with complete freedom, 'Our Father who art in heaven.'"  After that, Francis went off into the freezing woods wearing nothing but castoff rags to sing.  Then robbers beat him up and took all his clothes and from that day on, Francis had nothing and everything.

Biography of St. Francis

St. Francis of Assisi was born at Assisi in Umbria in 1182.  He enjoyed a very wealthy life style because his father Pietro di Bernardone, was a rich cloth merchant.  When Francis was first born, everyone loved him.  He was always happy, and was charming.  Everyone liked him that if he was picky, people excused him, if he was sick people would take care of him.  When Francis got older, he wanted to become a knight.  So he joined the war against Assisi and a town nearby called Perugia.  Most of the soldiers were killed during the fight but wealthy soldiers that had enough money to pay for their release were taken prisoner.  A year after he paid for his release and when he was leaving Assisi for a call for knights for the Fourth Crusade, he had a dream where God told him that he is going the wrong way and told him to return home.  Once he got home, he was humiliated, laughed at and called coward for not going into battle.  Also his father got angry at him for wasting his money on the amour.  Francis spent most of his time praying to God and he found a cave where he cried for his sins.  This is the part of his life where he starts to become more holy by praying to God and doing what God wants him to do.  Francis died on October 3, 1226 from an eye disease and the stigmata he received from a six winged angel while he was praying on the mountain of Verna.  Francis is the founder of the Franciscan orders and he is the patron saint of ecologists and merchants.  The national shrine of St. Francis is located in San Francisco, California.  The Basilica of St. Francis is built in Assisi.
